Pedestrian signage throughout Charlotte’s Uptown.

Key elements of the system included: 

  • Interstate Wayfinding: Guiding motorists to major destinations from the freeway.

  • Vehicular Wayfinding: Guiding motorists within Uptown to major destinations.

  • Pedestrian Wayfinding: Signs containing map, directional, and transit information while defining key areas of the Downtown. 

  • Parking Garage Signs:  Signs with real time parking data and five dynamic informational gateway signs at freeway exit ramps entering the city.  

Wayfinding Systems

Vivian Coleman, formerly in her role as the City of Charlotte Center City Transportation Program Manager served as project manager to complete the Uptown Wayfinding and Parking Guidance System.  This $4.1M project was among the most extensive wayfinding systems in the country, and one that embodies a wide variety of sign elements encompassing highways, city roads, pedestrian areas, parking and transit.  From 2011-2014 Vivian Coleman led the implementation team ensuring the system’s completion including fabrication and installation of static and dynamic sign components, project management of Federal grants associated with the project, public and stakeholder involvement, focus group evaluations and an alterations of the system as new businesses were added.
